On 6 October 2025, the President of the ECHR, Mattias Guyomar, spoke at a conference marking the 75th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights, organised in Strasbourg by the Maison de l'Europe Strasbourg-Alsace (MESA).

In his address to the participants, the Court President elaborated on the history of both the Convention and the Court, stating: “In the architecture of the Convention – the legal embodiment of humanism – it is therefore individuals who hold the rights and the States which must afford them, under the supervision of an international court established nine years after the Convention was signed.”

Noting that, 75 years after the signing of the Convention, war and arbitrariness are once again resurging, President Guyomar emphasised that the Court must remain faithful to its mission, uphold accountability, properly carry out the judicial functions entrusted to it, and apply the Convention in a manner that responds to contemporary needs and today’s context.
