On 4 September 2025, Court President Mattias Guyomar inaugurated the “Luzius Wildhaber” Room in the Human Rights Building, in honour of Luzius Wildhaber, who served as President of the Court from 1 November 1998 to 18 January 2007.

The ceremony was attended by the President of the Council of States of the Swiss Parliament, Andrea Caroni, representatives of the Permanent Representation of Switzerland to the Council of Europe, members of the family of the former Court President, Court judges and Registry staff.

In his speech before the attendees, President Guyomar said that the inauguration represents an institutional recognition and remembrance in tribute to the great judge and President that he was.

Luzius Wildhaber (1937-2020) joined the Court in 1991, where he served as Judge until 1998 and then as Judge and the first President of the “new” European Court of Human Rights, sitting on a permanent basis, following the entry into force of Protocol No. 11 to the European Convention on Human Rights. Previously, he held judicial positions with the Inter-American Development Bank (1989-1994) and in Liechtenstein (1975-1988). He was Rector of the University of Basel (1992–1994) and Professor at the Universities of Basel (1977–1998) and Fribourg (1971–1977). From 1974 to 1978, he coordinated a comprehensive revision of the Swiss Federal Constitution.
