Openings of the Judicial Year
Every year, these meetings provide a forum for discussion between judges from the Court and from various other courts on themes such as The role of consensus in the system of the European Convention on Human Rights, 50 years of the Court viewed by its fellow international Courts or Execution and effects of the judgments of the European Court of Human Rights: the role of the judiciary.
2022
Seminar - Dialogue between judges
A judicial seminar on Human rights protection in the time of the pandemic: new challenges and new perspectives took place on 24 June 2022 and was attended by important figures from the European judicial world.

Solemn hearing
A solemn hearing took place at the Court on 24 June 2022. During the solemn hearing, the President of the Hellenic Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, the President of the Court, Robert Spano, and the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights and keynote speaker, Dunja Mijatović, addressed representatives of the superior courts of the Council of Europe member States, and local, national and international authorities.

A judicial seminar on The Rule of Law and Justice in a digital age, preceding the solemn hearing, took place on 10 September 2021 and was attended by leading figures from the European judicial world.

Solemn hearing
A solemn hearing took place at the Court on 10 September 2021. During the solemn hearing, the President of the Court, Robert Spano, and the President of the Dutch Supreme Court of Cassation, Dineke de Groot, addressed representatives of the superior courts of the Council of Europe member states, and local, national and international authorities.

2020
Seminar - Dialogue between judges
The official opening of the judicial year of the ECHR took place on 31 January 2020. The event included a seminar on the topic The European Convention on Human Rights: living instrument at 70, at which many eminent figures from European judicial circles were present.

Solemn hearing
The seminar was followed by the ceremony to mark the official opening of the judicial year 2020. Mr Linos-Alexandre Sicilianos, President of the Court, and Chief Justice Clarke addressed representatives from the highest courts of the 47 member States of the Council of Europe and from local, national and international authorities.

2019
Seminar - Dialogue between judges
The official opening of the ECHR’s judicial year took place on 25 January 2019. The event included a seminar on the topic Strengthening Confidence in the Judiciary, attended by 260 eminent figures from the European judicial scene.

The guest of honour at this year’s opening ceremony was Laurent Fabius, President of the French Constitutional Council.

2018
Seminar - Dialogue between judges
The opening of the Court’s judicial year took place on 26 January 2018. To mark the occasion, a seminar was held on the topic The authority of the judiciary, attended by Presidents of the Supreme and Constitutional Courts of the Council of Europe member States and numerous senior judicial figures.

At the solemn hearing that followed the seminar, President Guido Raimondi and Koen Lenaerts, President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, addressed an audience of around 350 persons.

Seminar - Dialogue between judges
The official opening of the Court’s judicial year took place on 27 January 2017. Some 300 senior judicial figures from European States took part in a seminar on the theme: Non-refoulement as a principle of international law and the role of the judiciary in its implementation.

Seminar - Dialogue between judges
The theme of the seminar was International and national courts confronting large-scale violations of human rights. It was opened by Guido Raimondi and the sessions were chaired by Julia Laffranque and Ganna Yudkivska, Judges of the ECHR. The speakers at the seminar were Piotr Hofmański, Judge of the International Criminal Court, Aharon Barak, former President of the Supreme Court of Israel and Erik Møse, Ksenija Turković, Robert Spano and Iulia Antoanella Motoc, Judges of the ECHR.

The theme of the seminar was Subsidiarity: a two-sided coin? It was opened by Dean Spielmann, with an introduction by Julia Laffranque, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights elected in respect of Estonia. Sabino Cassese, Judge of the Constitutional Court of Justice of Italy, Angelika Nußberger, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights elected in respect of Germany, Jean-Marc Sauvé, Vice President of the French Conseil d’Etat, and Paul Lemmens, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Belgium, addressed the seminar.
