On 18 September 2026, the Council of Europe Division on Migration and Refugees and the European Network of National Human Rights Institutions co-organised a roundtable discussion on ensuring effective communication on migration and the Court, which brought together representatives of the Registry of the Court and of the Council of Europe, human rights lawyers, national human rights institutions, civil society organisations, journalists covering human rights law issues, and policy-makers.

In his opening remarks, the Deputy Registrar of the Court, Abel Campos, noted that disinformation concerning migrants and refugees is a crucial issue, as it not only distorts public debate but can also fuel stigmatisation, undermine trust in institutions, and jeopardise respect for fundamental rights.

Highlighting the Court’s efforts to counter disinformation with verifiable facts, the Deputy Registrar referred to a series of information products aimed at making facts about the Court’s migration-related case-law more accessible.

Rachael Kondak, Head of the Private Office of the President of the Court, provided an overview of the main challenges surrounding public discourse on migration and the Court, and highlighted concrete activities aimed at addressing them.

Ioanna Lachana, Community Manager at the Court, elaborated on how the Court leverages social media and outreach activities to highlight its positive impact on people’s everyday lives.

The roundtable, which was a contribution towards the New Democratic Pact for Europe, served as a forum to exchange on ways to communicate the positive impact of the Court on people's everyday lives and on national law and practice, while effectively countering misinformation and disinformation, as well as the vital roles played national human rights institutions, civil society organisations, legacy media and social media.
