Forthcoming Grand Chamber hearing

The Court will be holding a Grand Chamber hearing in the case of Kuijt v. the Netherlands on 21 January 2026.
Traffic Disruptions in the European District due to a farmers’ demonstration are expected on Tuesday, 20 January 2026, and Wednesday, 21 January 2026. The court building will be accessible exclusively on foot (more info).
The application concerns the practice in the Supreme Court of the Netherlands by which judges of the Criminal Law Division who do not form part of the formation to which the case has been assigned may participate in the deliberations. This is allowed in the interest of legal unity. These judges of the Supreme Court are called “reserve justices”.
