ECHR hosts event during 31st International Breast Surgery and Francophone Senology Conference

31st International Breast Surgery and Francophone Senology Conference - 9 October 2025
13/10/25

On 9 October 2025, the Court hosted a conference titled Humanitarian and Solidarity-Based Surgery, Equity in Healthcare as part of the 31st International Breast Surgery and Francophone Senology Conference.

The President of the Court, Mattias Guyomar, opened the event by welcoming participants to the Human Rights Building, describing it as a place that “symbolically reflects the intersections between medical ethics and its practice, as well as the daily work of the Court.”

In his address, President Guyomar stated: “Just as you treat the human body, so the courts tend to the social body. Every dispute brings to light a form of social ‘dis-ease’, and it is the courts’ task to heal it using the legal tools and judicial powers at their disposal.”

He also examined the role of the judge and referenced the Court’s case-law in the field of health.

Following his speech, Carole Mathelin, President of the National Academy of Surgery gave opening remarks, followed by Kateřina Šimáčková, Section President and judge elected in respect of the Czech Republic, and Sebastian Rădulețu, judge elected in respect of Romania. Vahit Ozmen, President of the International Society of Senology, concluded this introductory panel.
