On 5 March 2026, a delegation of the Supreme Court of Albania, led by its President, Sokol Sadushi, concluded a two-day visit to the Court. During the visit, the delegation attended the Grand Chamber hearing in the case Tergek v. Türkiye and had the opportunity to exchange views with judges and members of the Registry on issues relating to subsidiarity, the role of national courts in preventing violations of the Convention, as well as pre-trial detention and asset-based measures in criminal proceedings.

The President of the Court, Mattias Guyomar, welcomed the participants and highlighted the vital dialogue between the Court and national courts through judgments, advisory opinions, the Knowledge Sharing platform, and institutional visits. He expressed sympathy for the tragic death of Judge Astrit Kalaja of the Tirana Court of Appeal, fatally shot during a courtroom hearing last year, and called for reinforcing judicial unity and mutual assistance.

“As members of the judiciary, we should all stand together. For the sake of protecting judges’ physical integrity and dignity but also to protect judicial independence, both institutional and individual,” said President Guyomar, adding that “without judges, there is no rule of law.”

The Registrar of the Court, Marialena Tsirli, shared the Court’s experience and good practices in reducing the backlog, elaborating on the reforms introduced and the Court’s new working methods and procedures. She also highlighted the Court’s knowledge sharing and awareness raising initiatives.
