On 5 December 2025, the President of the Court, Mattias Guyomar, delivered an online address at a conference on the dynamic interpretation of European Union law, organised by Paris-Panthéon-Assas University in Paris.

President Guyomar emphasised that the Court’s “living instrument” doctrine reflects its judicial pragmatism. He added that for the Convention to remain faithful to its original intentions, it must respond to societal changes that could not have been foreseen when it was drafted.

The President also highlighted the Convention's ability to not only protect fundamental rights in the present, but also to take into account threats facing future generations.
