EVOLUTION OF THE CONVENTION


On 4 November 1950 the "Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms", better known as the "European Convention on Human Rights" was signed in Rome by member States of the Council of Europe. After 10 countries had ratified it, the Convention entered into force on 3 September 1953.

Over the last 50 years additional protocols have been repealed, integrated into the Convention or replaced, and today, the text of the ECHR contains the basic version as amended by Protocol 11 and 6 other protocols : the Additional Protocol (also called "Protocol No. 1") and Protocols Nos. 4, 6, 7, 12 and 13.


The official texts are published in the "European Treaty Series" (ETS) of the Council of Europe under the numbers ETS 009, 046, 117, 155, 177 and 187.

 

The complete text of the Convention and its Protocols can be found on the Council of Europe's Treaty database. A search by ETS number will retrieve the text in the two official languages as well as details such as the dates of signature and ratification by different countries, reservations, etc. There is no charge to use this database.
