Tribute to Jean-Paul Costa

Jean Paul Costa was born in 1941. He was an eminent member of the French Council of State (then an honorary member). He was elected judge to the European Court of Human Rights in respect of France on 1 November 1998. Section Vice-president (November 1998-1999), Section President (2000-2007), then Vice-President of the Court (2001-2007), he was elected President of the Court from 19 January 2007 to 3 November 2011. He was then President of the International Institute of Human Rights - René Cassin Foundation from January 2012 to April 2021 before becoming its Honorary President. Those who had the good fortune and honour to know him and to work with him will always remember him as an exceptional man of great humanity, a brilliant judge, and a President who was courteous and respectful towards all his Judicial colleagues and the Registry staff.
