In the case of G.T.B. v. Spain the Court held that there had been a violation of the right to respect for private and family life.

The case concerned attempts in Spain to register the applicant’s birth, which had taken place in Mexico. The Court found that for the period from 2002-06, the Spanish authorities, despite sure knowledge that the documents needed could not be located in Mexico, had not done enough to provide the applicant with a birth certificate and identification and so to secure his rights.
