Interlaken Conference on the future of the Court

President Costa, accompanied by a delegation of judges and members of the Registry, travelled to Interlaken (Switzerland) on 18 and 19 February to attend a Ministerial Conference on the future of the European Court of Human Rights. judgment in the case of Cudak v. Lithuania on Tuesday
23 March 2010.
In connection with the termination of her employment at foreign Embassy, the
applicant complains that she was denied access to a court on the basis of

Referrals before Grand Chamber

Three cases have been referred to the Grand Chamber: Lautsi v. Italy concerning crucifixes in classrooms,
Giuliani and Gaggio v. Italy concerning the death of a demonstrator during the G8 summit in 2001

President Costa, on 15 March 2010, attended an exchange of views held by the Council of Europe's European Committee of Social Rights with Vassilios Skouris, President of the Court of Justice of the European Union.

Hearing in the Yukos case

The Court held a Chamber hearing on Thursday 4 March 2010 in the case of
OAO Neftyanaya kompaniya YUKOS v. Russia. The applicant company was a publicly-traded private open joint-stock company incorporated under the laws of Russia. The case concerns the applicant company's complaint that it was targeted by the Russian authorities with tax and enforcement proceedings, which eventually led to its liquidation.

In the case of Kozak v. Poland the Court held that there had been a violation of the Convention on grounds of failure to recognise a homosexual's right to succeed to a tenancy of a flat after his partner's death.

In the case of Al-Saadoon and Mufdhi v. the United Kingdom the Court held, among other things, that there had been a violation of the prohibition on inhuman or degrading treatment. The applicants, who were two Iraqis who had been held in British-run detention facilities, were surrendered to the Iraqi authorities.

The Court declared inadmissible the case of Dalea v. France. The Court held that the refusal of entry to Schengen area on national security grounds did not breach applicant’s rights to respect for private life.

The Court declared inadmissible the case of
Demopoulos v. Turkey and seven other cases raising a similar issue. The applicants in these cases are Greek Cypriots who complained in particular that they have been deprived of the enjoyment of their possessions since Turkey's occupation of the northern part of Cyprus in 1974.
