Video-clips The Court has placed 10 new language versions of its Convention video clip online, bringing to 22 the total number of versions available.

In addition, the film on the Court entitled “The Conscience of Europe” has been re mastered and is currently available in 24 official languages of the Council of Europe member States.

Grand Chamber

Forthcoming judgments

The Court will be delivering its Grand Chamber judgments in the cases of Hirsi Jamaa and Others v. Italy and Creangă v. Romania on Thursday 23 February 2012. The case of Hirsi Jamaa and Others concerns Somalian and Eritrean migrants travelling from Libya who were intercepted at sea by the Italian authorities and sent back to Libya. The case of Creangă concerns a police officer, accused of corruption, who was deprived of his liberty.

Recent judgments

07/02/2012

The Court delivered its Grand Chamber judgments in the cases of Axel Springer AG v. Germany and Von Hannover v. Germany (no. 2). The Court held that there had been a violation of the Convention in the case Axel Springer AG, and no violation of the Convention in the case Von Hannover (no. 2). Both cases concerned the publication in the media of articles and, in the second case, of photos depicting the private life of well-known people.

Decisions

Inadmissibility decisions

10/02/2012

The Court has declared the application inadmissible in the case of Balan v. Moldova. The case concerned the new domestic remedy introduced in Moldova against non enforcement of final domestic judgments and unreasonable length of proceedings, following a pilot judgment.

Official visits

Meeting with Senior Judiciary of the United Kingdom

On 16 and 17 February 2012, Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court, attended a meeting between representatives of the Senior Judiciary of the United Kingdom and of the European Court in London. During the visit, the President was received by the Rt. Hon. Lord McNally, Minister of State for the Ministry of Justice. He also met members of the Judiciary of England and Wales led by the Rt. Hon. the Lord Judge, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales; Justices of the Supreme Court led by the Rt. Hon. the Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, President of the Supreme Court; members of the Judiciary of Scotland led by the Rt. Hon. Lord Hamilton, Lord President and Lord Justice General of Scotland; and the Rt. Hon. Sir Declan Morgan, Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland. Sir Nicolas Bratza was accompanied by Judges and members of the Registry.

In the case Eremiášová and Pechová v. the Czech Republic, the Court held that there had been a violation of the right to life. The case concerned the death of a man of Roma origin in a police station.

In the case of Vejdeland and Others v. Sweden, the Court found that the applicants' conviction for distributing leaflets insulting homosexuals did not breach the right to freedom of expression. In conjunction with this judgment a new factsheet on "hate speech" has been published.
