Visit by the Deputy Prime Minister of Montenegro

On 6 December 2011 Duško Marković, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice of Montenegro, visited the Court and was received by Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court. Nebojša Vučinić, the judge elected in respect of Montenegro, and Erik Fribergh, Registrar, also attended the meeting.

Visit by the President and the Secretary General of the Court of Cassation of Turkey

On 1 December 2011 Nazım Kaynak, President of the Court of Cassation of Turkey, and Aydın Boşgelmez, Secretary General of the Court of Cassation visited the Court, where they met with Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court. Conference at Wilton Park

On 17, 18 and 19 November 2011, Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court, went to a conference at Wilton Park on a “2020 Vision for the European Court of Human Rights”. This conference was organised by the British Chairmanship of the Committee of Minister. The President was accompanied by Elisabet Fura, the judge elected in respect of Sweden and Michael O’Boyle, Deputy Registrar.

Visit to the Russian Federation

On 27 and 28 October 2011, President Costa paid an official visit to the Russian Federation at the invitation of Valery Zorkin, President of the Constitutional Court. The 20th anniversary of the Constitutional Court was celebrated in the presence of Dmitri Medvedev, President of the Russian Federation, at the Kremlin in Moscow. During the visit, President Costa participated to an international conference in Saint Petersburg. He delivered two speeches, one in Moscow and another in Saint Petersburg. President Costa was accompanied by Sir Nicolas Bratza, President elect and judge elected in respect of the United Kingdom and Anatoly Kovler, judge elected in respect of the Russian Federation.
Visit of the President of the Palestinian National Authority

On 6 October 2011 Mahmoud Abbas, President of the Palestinian National Authority and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation was welcomed by President Costa. Erik Fribergh, Registrar, and Michael O'Boyle, Deputy Registrar, also attended the meeting.

Visit by a delegation from the Court of Justice of the European Union

A delegation from the Court of Justice of the European Union, headed by its President, Vassilios Skouris, paid a working visit to the European Court of Human Rights on 3 October 2011. The delegation met judges and members of the Court’s Registry and took part in a round table discussion, which focussed on the current situation in both courts, particularly the question of the European Union's accession to the Convention, the Interlaken and Izmir Conferences and recent developments in the case-law of the two courts.

On 26 September 2011, President Costa received a delegation from the Supreme Court of Austria visited the Court for a working meeting with Judges of the Court and members of the Registry.
Visit to Canada

President Costa visited Canada from 18 to 22 September, at the invitation of Professor Peter Leuprecht, former Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe. He gave lectures at Laval University in Quebec and McGill University in Montreal. At the invitation of the Supreme Court of Canada, he attended a meeting and working lunch with the Supreme Court judges in Ottawa.

On 8, 9 and 10 September 2011, President Costa paid an official visit to Montenegro at the invitation of Vesna Medenica, President of the Supreme Court. President Costa was received by Filip Vujanovic, President of Montenegro. He met Ranko Krivokapic, President of the Parliament, Igor Lukšic, President of the Government and Duško Markovic, Vice-President of the Government and Minister of Justice. President Costa also met Milan Markovic, President of the Constitutional Court. During the visit, he participated to an interactive dialogue with Judges of the Supreme Court. President Costa was accompanied by Nebojša Vucinic, judge elected in respect of Montenegro and by Patrick Titiun, Head of the Office of the President.

On 16 and 17 June 2011 President Costa paid an official visit to Bulgaria at the invitation of the Supreme Court of Cassation. President Costa was received by Georgi Parvanov, President of the Republic of Bulgaria. He met Lasar Gruev, President of the Supreme Court of Cassation, Tsetska Tsacheva, President of the National Assembly, Yordan Bakalov, President of the Human Rights Commission at the National Assembly and other representatives of the Commission. He also met Nikolay Mladenov, Minister of Foreign Affairs. President Costa was accompanied by Zdravka Kalaydjieva, judge elected in respect of Bulgaria and by Lawrence Early, Section Registrar.

On Friday 20 May 2011 President Costa opened a training seminar, organised jointly by the Association of Training and Research in European Law of Human Rights (AFREDH), the French National Federation of Young Lawyers (FNUJA) and the UJA. Corneliu Bîrsan, Judge elected in respect of Romania, took also part in this seminar.

President Costa made the welcoming speech at the training seminar organised by the UIA on 19 and 20 May 2011 in Strasbourg. Other judges also spoke at this seminar, entitled “Pleadings before the European Court of Human Rights and the right to a fair trial” (link to the programme of the event).
Visit to Ireland

On 13 and 14 May 2011 President Costa paid an official visit to Ireland. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, John L. Murray, had arranged meetings for the Court’s President with judges of the Supreme Court and High Court. President Costa was also received by the Minister for Justice and Equality, Alan Shatter, by Nicholas Kearns, President of the High Court of Justice, and by Máire Whelan, Attorney General. On 14 May 2011 President Costa spoke on the “best interests of the child in the Court’s case-law” at an Irish-British-French symposium on family law. He was accompanied by Ann Power, judge elected in respect of Ireland, and by Michael O’Boyle, Deputy Registrar. Ann Power also gave a lecture at the symposium on “the nature of family today”. On the occasion of his visit to Dublin, President Costa was formally proclaimed “Honorary Bencher” of the Honorable Society of King’s Inns.
