Visit to Italy

On 2 and 3 May 2012, Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court, paid an official visit to Roma. During the visit, he was received by Giorgio Napolitano, President of the Republic of Italy. He met Paola Severino, Minister of Justice, and Ernesto Lupo, President of the Court of Cassation. Sir Nicolas Bratza also met Giancarlo Coraggio, President of the Council of State, and Franco Gallo, Vice-President of the Constitutional Court. Sir Nicolas Bratza was accompanied by Guido Raimondi, judge elected in respect of Italy and Erik Fribergh, Registrar.

Visit to Turkey

From 25 to 26 April 2012, Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court, paid an official visit to Turkey at the invitation of Haşim Kiliç, President of the Constitutional Court. The 50th anniversary of the Constitutional Court was celebrated in Ankara in the presence of Abdullah Gül, President of the Republic of Turkey. Sir Nicolas Bratza was accompanied by Judges
of the Court.

Visit by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland

On 27 March 2012, Erkki Tuomioja, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland, visited the Court and was received by Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court. Païvi Hirvelä, the judge elected in respect of Finland, and Erik Fribergh, Registrar, also attended the meeting.
Conference in Strasbourg

Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court, participated in a conference entitled “Combating discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation or gender identity across Europe: sharing knowledge and moving forward”. This conference was organised by the British Chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe.

Visit by a delegation of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon

On 19 March 2012 Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court, received a delegation from the Special Tribunal for Lebanon led by his President, Sir David Baragwanath, for a working meeting. During the visit the delegation met Judges of the Court and members of the Registry.

Visit to Washington

From 29 February to 2 March 2012, Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court, was in Washington for a seminar with the Supreme Court on “Judicial process and the protection of rights” organised by the State Department with the George Washington University Law School. The meeting with the Supreme Court was initiated by Harold Koh, Legal Adviser of the State department. The President also addressed the Permanent Council of the Organisation of American States and met the President of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, Dinah Shelton. Sir Nicolas Bratza was accompanied by Judges and the Registrar and Deputy Registrar.

Meeting with Senior Judiciary of the United Kingdom

On 16 and 17 February 2012, Sir Nicolas Bratza, President of the Court, attended a meeting between representatives of the Senior Judiciary of the United Kingdom and of the European Court in London. During the visit, the President was received by the Rt. Hon. Lord McNally, Minister of State for the Ministry of Justice. He also met members of the Judiciary of England and Wales led by the Rt. Hon. the Lord Judge, Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales; Justices of the Supreme Court led by the Rt. Hon. the Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, President of the Supreme Court; members of the Judiciary of Scotland led by the Rt. Hon. Lord Hamilton, Lord President and Lord Justice General of Scotland; and the Rt. Hon. Sir Declan Morgan, Lord Chief Justice of Northern Ireland. Sir Nicolas Bratza was accompanied by Judges and members of the Registry.
